Arguably the last true "legacy model" created by Patek Philippe, the reference 3796 was introduced in 1982 and remained in production until the late 1990s, succeeding the discontinued reference 96—the first and original Calatrava from the 1930s. Both models appear identical on the wrist, each measuring 31mm in diameter. The subtle differences include a sapphire crystal, the new cal. 215 movement in the present reference, and a sapphire caseback featuring a small flap for easier opening.

A striking timepiece for its size, the present Calatrava reference 3796 is extremely rare, showcasing an 18K white gold case with a contrasting pink Sigma dial. The lower-case Greek letter sigma beside the "Swiss" signature at the bottom of the dial indicates that the hands and hour markers are made of solid 18K gold.

Exuding supreme grace and elegance, this watch was part of a limited edition of just 100 pieces produced exclusively for the Japanese market. We had the privilege of featuring another Japanese edition example in white gold, reference 3796G-018, at the TOKI Watch auction in 2024. Fresh to the auction market, the present Calatrava is one of only a handful to have resurfaced and comes complete with all its accessories. Preserved in outstanding condition, it stands as a true testament to Patek Philippe's discreet elegance and timeless aesthetics.

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
