Established by Patek Philippe in 2005, the Advanced Research department embodies the brand's dedication to advancing horological innovation. This division focuses on exploring new materials and micro-engineering techniques, leading to groundbreaking advancements that have redefined precision and performance in watchmaking. In its inaugural year, Patek Philippe introduced the first timepiece developed under this initiative: the ref. 5250 Annual Calendar, limited to just 100 pieces. This model featured a newly patented Silinvar escape wheel, a revolutionary component that is two-thirds lighter than a traditional escape wheel. This innovation required less energy to operate, allowing for greater power allocation toward timekeeping accuracy.
Following the success of the ref. 5250 and 5350, Patek Philippe launched the ref. 5450 Annual Calendar in 2008, limited to 300 pieces in platinum and notable for its striking "salmon" dial. This model incorporated the Gyromax balance with a Spiromax hairspring and introduced the newly developed Pulsomax escapement, featuring an upgraded silicon escape wheel and pallet lever. The ref. 5450 represented the pinnacle of the Advanced Research department's efforts on annual calendars, as subsequent models, such as the ref. 5550, would evolve into perpetual calendar complications.
Preserved in single-factory-sealed condition, this watch comes complete with all its accessories, including the Advanced Research box.

For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
