When Vacheron Constantin introduced the original Overseas in 1996, they brought a modern edge to the integrated steel sports watch. As successor to the 1970s 222 model, the Overseas retained signature traits like the notched bezel and minimalist look. Designed by a team including external contributor Dino Modolo and Vacheron Constantin's Vincent Kaufmann, the 37mm Overseas debuted alongside 35mm and 24mm versions.
This first-generation example in yellow gold represents the largest original size, housing an automatic movement. Among Vacheron Constantin devotees, the first generation Overseas holds mythic status. These references were scarcely produced before transitioning to later ref. 42042 and ref. 42052 models. Yet an even rarer iteration exists - the elusive present ref. 42540 with its diamond-set bezel adding an extra spark of luxury to the sport watch. According to our research, only a handful of examples are known.
Dating to 1996, this ref. 42540 was likely among the very first batch produced. For the Vacheron Constantin aficionado, this glittering and well-preserved Overseas in yellow gold with diamond-set bezel is one of the rarest examples to come across.
