  • Description

Executed early in his career, Untitled (City Limits) reflects the importance of language in pioneering conceptual artist Allen Ruppersberg’s practice along with contemporaries Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari. Each work depicts a snapshot of a city limit sign from small towns in California with a hand holding a magazine comically extending into the frame, interrupting the otherwise quiet scene. This juxtaposition and sequential arrangement of the series of five photographs induces the viewer to search for a narrative that extends across the works.
