Emeralds, celebrated as the gem of spring, are renowned for their striking colour. Having been the subject of fascination since antiquity, emeralds are a bluish-green variety of the mineral: beryl. When chromium, vanadium and iron are present in beryl, emeralds form, and the varying presence of these three elements results in a range of colours.
For more than 4,000 years, emeralds have been among the most valuable of all jewels. The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC into the 1700s. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emerald, and used it in her royal adornments.
Emeralds from what is now Colombia were part of the plunder when sixteenth-century Spanish explorers invaded the New World. Colombia, located in northern South America, is the country that mines and produces the most emeralds for the global market, as well as the most desirable. It is estimated that Colombia accounts for more than 60% of the world's emerald market. While commercial grade emeralds are quite plentiful, fine and extra fine quality emeralds are extremely rare.
When grading gemstones, colour is normally the most important criterion — although with emeralds, clarity comes a close second. The most coveted stones possess both a verdant green hue and a high degree of transparency. For a gem to be considered an emerald, it must be medium to dark in tone — with lighter-toned gems known instead by the species name green beryl. A high saturation of green is also highly desirable.
It is natural for emeralds to feature inclusions and surface-breaking fissures — it is so common for emeralds to be flawed that a ‘clean’ stone is said to be virtually unknown. Jewellers call these inclusions jardin, the french term for garden, because they are said to resemble mossy wilderness, ‘growing’ within the stone.
The majority of emeralds are treated in some way, in order to fill surface-reaching cracks, and to improve their clarity and sometimes their stability. Common treatments include the use of oils and polymers. While it is accepted, the degree of treatment can reduce value: untreated emeralds of similar appearance would take on a far higher value, owing to their extreme value.
Lot 584, is a remarkable 5.35 carat natural Colombian emerald which possesses an evenly distributed, vibrant green hue of strong saturation. The emerald crystal is an exceptionally clean specimen, devoid of any clarity enhancement which is extremely rare and highly desirable. If history has demonstrated emeralds’ enduring popularity, today’s market shows a growing appreciation for the gem. Market prices in recent years have been high, with buyers demonstrating an increased interest for rare, untreated emeralds.
