  • Catalogue Essay

Originally hailing from Montreal, Jean-Paul Riopelle’s association with the automatistes in Paris brought him international recognition as part of the postwar French abstract expressionist movement. Tending toward lyrical abstraction, Riopelle’s art is heavily impastoed revealing his reliance on palette knife to create vast fields of colors. The present lot’s dominating white and red blocks are entangled by automatic strokes of varying colours. The emotive force behind each stroke epitomizes the abstract expressionist style and the individual power of expression behind Riopelle’s works.
