  • Catalogue Essay

“Kilimnik’s paintings… function as inspired acts of ‘redecoration’… It is all there in a nutshell: magic, fun, desire, and pretense, as well as the compulsion to assemble and collect…Taken as a whole, her oeuvre is that of an artist who is both enthralled and covetous, forever torn between seemingly contrasting impulses toward abandon and control."
    (L. Bovier, Karen Kilimnik, Zurich, 2006, pp. 3 & 137)

Karen Kilimnik's work is concerned with the depiction of powerful historical and contemporary icons that are taken from high and popular culture. Her practice, usually shown in the form of installations or painting and photographs, ranges over imagery that is both personal and culturally specific.
