Mania Akbari is an accomplished artist, actress and an award winning film maker. She starred in Abbas Kiarostami’s Ten, a film based on Kiarostami’s interpretation of Akbari’s own life in 2003. The following year, Akbari went behind the camera and directed, co-wrote and coproduced 20 Fingers which won the prize for best film at the Venice Film Festival.
Following this success Akbari was diagnosed with cancer. She chose to document her battle against the disease and produced the documentary film 10+4 which revolves around the filmmaker’s uncertainty as to whether she would live to finish the film. 10+4 wasscreened at numerous film festivals and received the prize for best film at both the Nantes Film Festival and the Kerala Film Festival.
Mania Akbari uses large scale photography, film and video as media to create visually stunning art with deeply resonating messages on thefemale role in society and on the various means by which women have been treated in society over several millennia of human evolution.
