  • Catalogue Essay

With synonymous horological expertise in creating some of the finest wristwatches with a strategic focus on craftsmanship, A. Lange & Söhne is one of the youngest and most successful independent manufacturers in the industry. In 2009, the firm launched its first “Pour le Mérite” limited edition of 200 pieces in pink gold and 50 pieces in platinum. Complicated and highly technical with a requirement of precise engineering, the watch features a fusée and chain which in scope mimics the chain witnessed on a bicycle with an aim to achieve constant flow of energy. Which, is unachievable with a tradition mainspring unless it is fitted with a remontoir d’egalité, a mechanism providing a constant force.

With its successful reception of the first limited edition in pink gold, the firm introduced a variant in white gold fitted with an attractive matte black dial in 2016 with a production of 218 pieces. With extreme simplicity on the dial layout and design, the watch boasts its appeal when flipped to the movement side displayed insolently with a sapphire caseback. The immediate attention that one directs themselves to when viewing the movement is the classic hand engraved balance cock, and with no doubt the chain can be witnessed too. The present example is presented in excellent overall condition with the full set of accessories. A momentous chance for the most discerned lovers of horology to acquire an impressive piece of craft by one of the most respected manufacturers today.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
