Afrika (Sergei Bugaev) was born in 1966 in Novorossiysk on the coast of the Black Sea. He moved to St. Petersburg in the 1980s, where after he shortly adopted the artistic name “Afrika.” He works mainly in performance and installation art and currently lives and works in St Petersburg, Miami and New York. Bugaev’s work has long dealt with the underlying psychic disturbances of the new Russia, treating its politics as psychopathology and its psychopathology as politics.
