Russian-born Alexandre Reza first came to Paris after the Second World War, following in his father’s footsteps by supplying the rarest and most impeccable gemstones to jewellery giants on Place Vendôme including Cartier, Chaumet, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels, just to name a few. Rumoured to have accrued one of the world’s largest inventories of unheated and untreated coloured gemstones, Reza joined the league of Place Vendôme haute joailliers in the 1980’s and founded his eponymous Maison. The aesthetics of Reza jewels is characterized by time-transcending classicism with modern sensibility. Being inspired by art and history of the Renaissance and the 18th century, Reza masterfully confers emotion and magnetism on his jewels through architectural designs that are deceivingly minimal. Since Reza tailored not only the setting of their jewels, but also the material itself to maximize the beauty of the gemstone, even a design which is seemingly ‘simple’ would take 12 to 18 months to complete. The bombé mounting of this ring carefully shapes the outline of the sapphire in a fitted cradle of brilliant diamonds, complimenting the magnificence of this rare unheated Sri Lankan gemstone. Supreme artistry and connoisseurship are evident in each tiny detail. It is counted among the limited number of jewels created annually and sold by-appointment-only to prestigious clients. The Maison is now under the leadership of Olivier, Alexandre’s son, who continues to use some of the superb gems collected by his father in sophisticated works; every creation testifies to an everlasting passion and dedication for rarest of gems.
