Catalogue Essay
In the present lot, Untitled, Anselm Reyle re-evaluates the surface of painting the predominant element throughout his body of work. This series of works was executed within the framework of remembering past artists within German culture. Untitled, with its collaged technique, is a painting that conveys a kaleidoscopic effect with each patch of colour, symbolising different emotions – from mourning and sadness, to happiness and elation, with the mirrored elements possibly alluding to the process of reflection that Reyle aims to create. With mixed media and the choice of bright colours this work encapsulates a sense of spiritualism and triumph – a painting capturing past and present as a universal symbol. With its fractured surface, Reyle allows for spectators to consider this work, as well as his other paintings, as platforms upon which the disjointed reality of the world can be mirrored – art as a vehicle to convey messages.
