  • Catalogue Essay

Barnaby Furnas’ paintings reside in a balance between abstraction and figuration, play with flat verse illusionistic surfaces. His active compositions explode with fractured cartoon-like imagery. Gushing vibrant blood, fiery explosions and clouds of smoke become elaborate painterly gestures. His complex and dazzling paintings reward extended viewing.
Though his paintings seem to revel in visions of extreme physical violence -perhaps Baranby Furnas’ true focus is the extraordinary. He combines the depicted horror with sublime beauty. Ecstasy is central to his seemingly chaotic paintings, illuminating the condition of being literally moved by the turbulent force of some vivid experience or emotion.
