- The Breguet ref. 5335 Tourbillon Messidor is a contemporary interpretation of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s original tourbillon concept from 1801. This grand complication timepiece derives its name "Messidor" from the specific date of July 7th, 1801 on the old French Revolutionary calendar - the very day that the tourbillon was granted a patent.
- Housed in a 40mm pink gold case, the present timepiece showcases Breguet’s expertise in both technical innovation and timeless design. This is quite an exquisite timepiece, to say the least. As a Grande Complication watch, this amount of elaborate decorating and Haute Horlogerie is expected of the tourbillon watch that was named after 7 Messidor, year IX of the French revolutionary calendar; the very date that the tourbillon complication was patented.
- At the heart of this timepiece beats Breguet’s manually-wound cal. 558 SQ2, developed and produced entirely in-house. Featuring Breguet's iconic tourbillon escapement, which was engineered to offset the negative effects of gravity on the precision of the movement, the cal. 558 SQ2 epitomizes Breguet's constant pursuit of chronometric precision and perfection.
- On the dial, the Tourbillon Messidor displays the hours and minutes in a minimalist manner, allowing the skeletonized movement to take center stage. The dial also displays the Breguet signature and individual case number at 12 o’clock, underscoring the personal connection between the watch and its owner, continuing the tradition established by A. L. Breguet in 1775.
- Preserved in excellent overall condition with all its original accessories, this special reference would make an excellent addition to any collection focused on important, modern tourbillon watches and further builds upon Breguet’s historical significance as a pioneer of horological complications.
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.
Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
