  • Catalogue Essay

Candida Höfer captures a palpable presence in her photographs of public spaces such as libraries, museums, and lecture halls, though all works are completely bereft of people.  In her series of empty opera houses, the artist gives us the sense of the ghosts of not only the performers and audience, but of all of the stories that have come before in these great spaces.  In the current lot she takes us to the Palais Garnier, in Paris, the original Phantom of the Opera venue built in 1875.
