Vine draws inspiration from the infamous balete tree, which, according to Filipino folklore, acts as a dwelling for mystical elements and supernatural creatures. The twisting, writhing form of this sculpture echoes the form of the balete tree’s vines, which hang like a dense curtain. By using gradations of gold to blue and a luminous reflective surface to create this artwork, Carlo Calma invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the interplay of light and shadow. Vine rotates in a clockwise direction, suggesting both the revolution of the earth and the constant passing of days and nights.
Calma’s artistic practice pushes the boundaries between art and architecture. Integral to his work is the notion of movement. He is well known for the performative quality of his sculptural and architectural designs.
