  • Catalogue Essay

    - A sought after series of iconic models by Cartier, the Collection Privée Cartier Paris unveiled since 1998 revives some of Cartier’s most iconic timepieces that excites collectors from all over the world. With each and every release within the collection becoming highly collectible, the CPCP series were dropping like greatest hits for a decade until 2008 with a limited production number mostly ranging from 50 to 150 pieces each.

    - Designed by none other than the brainchild Louis Cartier in 1912, the Tortue — “Tortue à pattes” or “tortoise on legs—was ground-breaking at a time where watches were conventionally round.

    - Part of the CPCP collection, the Cartier Tortue Quantième Perpétuel ref. 2721 cased in platinum features an impressive perpetual calendar with leap year at 12 o’clock and a 24-hour indicator for second timezone at 6 o’clock. A wealth of information to communicate, but the dial is perfectly balanced with the clever arrangement of four sub registers.

    - A beautifully designed guilloché dial with the most classic elements of Cartier such as the chemin de fer minute track, to the large stylized Roman numerals with the Cartier secret signature at 7 o’clock. The final touch of the rosette motif is further signed off with the Cartier Paris signature for its “Privée flaire”.

    - Exhibited through the sapphire caseback is the in-house self-winding calibre 9421MC with an interlocked “C” motif that flourishes across the rotor and bridges. Based on a Girad Perregaux ebauche equipped with a Dubois Dépraz perpetual calendar module, the power reserve is up to 48 hours.

    - Numbered 039 of a three digit case number engraved on the back, the present timepiece is presented in excellent condition and is accompanied with a Collection Privée Cartier Paris presentation box.

    Cartier

    French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
