With his unique synthesis of fine art and sound, Christian Marclay has produced a dynamic body of work that unlocks the potential of the visual arts as a multisensory experience. He is an accomplished composer who fuses music with ambient sound and noise, and his oeuvre includes performance, installation, film, and, as seen here, photography.

Adopting the traditional photogram technique, Marclay positioned the hand holding the record on photographic paper and exposed it to light. The color variations seen on the hand and record suggest a movement that resonates with Marclay’s use of turntables throughout his career, and beautifully encapsulates this integration of audio and visual elements. Other photographs by Marclay incorporate record covers, unraveled cassette tapes, instruments, and musical gear.

As seen in the installation image above, this print was included in the exhibition A Collective Invention: Photographs at Play at The Morgan Library and Museum in New York City in 2014.
