  • Catalogue Essay

    - In 2005, the Daniel Roth Manufacture launched the Papillon, under the Masters Complications Collection, with the ambition of creating an extraordinary timepiece which blends traditional watchmaking with innovative design.

    - Three variants in different case metals and dial colours were released, including a white gold version with a silvered dial, pink gold version with rhodium black dial, and arguably the most alluring, a platinum version with a blue steel dial. Encased in an iconic platinum Ellipsocurvex case, the present timepiece is instantly recognizable as a Daniel Roth watch, and it boasts a distinctive dial design with two apertures showing the charismatic jumping hours and small seconds respectively.

    - The name Papillon in fact refers to the profile of butterfly wings and describes the mechanism of the central axis on which the seconds hand and the rotating disc connecting the two pivoting minute hands are mounted. The two blued lozenge-shaped retractable minute hands are displayed at the centre, revolving across the beautiful guilloché dial. Upon reaching the 60 minutes, one of them pivots on its own axis and disappears behind the hidden part of the dial, while the other identical hand is revealed at 0 minute at the same time.

    - Powered by the in-house patented automatic calibre DR 115, the movement oscillates at 28'800 vph and offers a 45-hour power reserve. Preserved in attractive condition, the present example is complete with its full set of accessories. Numbered 21 of a limited edition of 80 pieces, the rare opportunity to acquire this marvellous timepiece should not be missed by the discerning collector.
