Closely associated with the Nouveau Réalisme and Fluxus movements, Daniel Spoerri coined the term “Snare-picture” in 1960 to describe objects mounted to the surface on which they were found. Gold Ist Scheisse (Gold is Shit) reflects the artist’s renowned interest in food and assemblage and his reliance on chance, which harks back to the Dada movement. In 1968, Spoerri opened the widely popular Restaurant Spoerri in Düsseldorf, where the remains of diners’ meals could be fixed and mounted on request. Objects from well-known artists’ dining experiences, such as Joseph Beuys and Roy Lichtenstein, were later exhibited at his associated Eat Art gallery, visually eternalizing their visit.
