“I started with portraits and landscapes and still lifes, because I thought that’s what painting was supposed to be.”
—Eddie MartinezKnown for his colorful and graphic paintings, which blur the boundary between abstraction and representation, this work harkens back to imagery of Eddie Martinez's early career. Significant as presumably one of the first prints Martinez ever produced, A Big Old Steely Dan Conversation was published concurrently with his first solo show of the same name, held at Allston Skirt Gallery in Boston. This screenprint gives insight into the origins of Martinez’ unconventional figuration, rooted in cartoons and an engagement with popular culture; humor and play continue to be central components of his practice today.
