“At some point I came to realise that everything surrounding me can be material for an artistic work, absolutely everything.”
—Erwin Wurm
One of Austria’s most prominent contemporary artists, Erwin Wurm is internationally recognized for his unorthodox approach to art making. His sculptural objects are often inspired by banal everyday objects; however, skilfully deformed, distorted, and blown out of proportion they obtain an entirely new dimension.
From the 10th of June the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is hosting Trap of the Truth, a major retrospective of the artist’s work. The exhibition features over 100 works by Wurm, including 74 sculptures both indoors and outdoors, as well as paintings, photographs, and drawings created over 30 years of the artist’s career. The present work, Hypnosis – an aluminium sculpture that Wurm has returned to several times since 2007 and produced in varying scales – can also be seen set against the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
