  • Catalogue Essay

Franz West works primarily as a sculptor, experimenting with ideas of mass, space, and color using mediums varying from metal to video. His aim is to bring the realm of art into the everyday, encouraging public interaction with the work and redefining contemporary sculpture through furniture. The raw, unfinished aesthetic of his lamps and chairs further blurs the line between art and design. West was born in Vienna in 1947 and attended the Viennese Academy of Fine Art and is considered to be one of the most influential contemporary European sculptors.
