  • Catalogue Essay

Georges de Feure designed the present model cabinet, as well as the armoire and dressing table which are also included in the present sale (lots 31 and 37), for art dealer Siegfried Bing’s “L’Art Nouveau Pavilion” at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. For this project, Bing brought together three artists who now represent some of the best craftsmanship of the period: Eugene Gaillard, Edward Colonna, and Georges de Feure. The interior included a network of rooms that displayed these three designers' furniture pieces as well as other decorative objects that, together, presented a new, modern way for living.

By comparing period illustrations of the dressing room suite de Feure designed for the pavilion to the present cabinet (lot 33), one can see that the grain patterning of the wood matches, confirming that this work was produced for the Exposition Universelle.
