“Gert and UweTobias are adding their own distinct voice to the illustrious art historical tradition of the woodcut while drawing on a range of influences from Hollywood B-movies to Eastern European folk art,” Sarah Suzuki states in her press release for Projects 86: Gert & Uwe Tobias, a soloexhibition for the brothers at the Museum of Modern Art earlier this year.
With a lush sense of color and strong use of graphic imagery, theTobias brothers’ work explores cultural identity through the lens of their own personal narratives. The brothers were born in Brasov, Romania, a former Saxon colony located inTransylvania and moved to Germany at age 12. Their work merges many styles, in a contemporary way including folklore, Eastern European arts and crafts, the Russian Avant-Garde and Constructivism. Being fromTransylvania, their work also shows a fascination with the historical figure VladTepes and the literary and cinematic character Dracula that was based onTepes.
