  • Jessie Homer French’s Mapestry of the Coachella Valley, 2012, prominently exemplifies the artist’s “regional narrative” practice in which elements of local settings are refracted through an aesthetic lens inspired by the tenets of folk art. The work is part of French’s celebrated Mapestries series, which employs intricately sewn fabric collages to document the geography, flora, and fauna of Southern California–a region the artist has called home since the 1960s. Blending elements of traditional handicraft with a deep sense of environmental awareness, French’s Mapestries celebrate the interplay of nature, culture and memory that lies at the center of her oeuvre.

Through Mapestry of the Coachella Valley, Homer French evokes the desert’s expansive landscapes and fragile ecosystems. With finely stitched representations of palm and Joshua trees, lakes and mountains, tilapia and chuckwalla, the piece captures the area’s distinctive natural character. Yet also, the artist uses her quilting techniques and stitched lines to depict the man-made elements within the area, such as the wind turbines and highways, underscoring the interconnectedness of human-made and natural landscapes. This tactile approach, with its deliberate nod to traditional “women’s work,” elevates the personal and local to the universal and monumental.

The Mapestries series demonstrates Homer French’s ability to infuse landscapes with narrative depth. Her work extends across both folk and fine art, combining flattened perspectives and somewhat bold portrayal with a quiet, meditative energy. In Mapestry of the Coachella Valley, Homer French invites viewers to reflect on the region’s natural beauty, its ecological challenges, and the looming specter of human interference.

Rooted in her personal experiences of California life, this work also reflects Homer French’s broader thematic concerns: grief, resilience, and the cyclical nature of life. Living in the Coachella Valley, Homer French translates her intimate knowledge of the region into visual poetry. Mapestry of the Coachella Valley embodies her lifelong commitment to documenting the unique stories of her surroundings and preserving them for future generations to come.
