  • Catalogue Essay

The present lot, Concetto Spaziale Attesa, attests to Fontana’s brilliance to vivify a canvas with apparent banality and demonstrates to us how complex meanings become alive through the simplest of means. His ability to transform an act of apparent destruction into an act of a creative nonchalance is until today unchallenged and inimitable. Fontana once articulated this act as an understanding that “dimension beyond the painting, the freedom to conceive art through any means, through any form.”
(Lucio Fontana quoted in Lucio Fontana Exhibition Catalogue, Rome, Palazzo
    delle Esposzioni, 1998).
