Maarten Van Severen began producing furniture in 1985.  Informed by a strong background in architecture and a family of artisans, the precision and minimalism of his designs and his careful handling of materials are evident in the offered lots.  Industrial production of Maarten Van Severen's designs began in 1996 for multiple international manufacturing firms.  The widespread success of his designs soon led to frequent collaborations with other artists and designers, most notably Rem Koolhaas, for whom in 1997, Van Severen designed the complex interior of the Villa Floirac in Bordeaux, voted by Time Magazine to be the most important design of the 20th century.  A year later, Van Severen received the Flemish Region's design award and was also appointed Cultural Ambassador of Flanders.  The leader of Belgian Minimalism, as he is often called, Van Severen is also credited with helping Flanders achieve international recognition in the world of design.
