Niniko Morbedadze - 20th Century to Now London Friday, June 30, 2023 | Phillips
  • “Art, as a metaphysical phenomenon, determines the spiritual level of the conscious and influences the development of society by affirming non material values.”
    —Niniko Morbedadze

In 2021, following the isolation experienced during the previous year, Niniko Morbedadze started expanding on the theme of reliefs in her work and created the Ancient Histories series. The works from which this series developed were Hall from 2021 and Stone Histories from 2021, which is simultaneously one of the first pieces the artist created on canvas. Carving life into rock and stone Niniko entirely negates the notion of restriction and boundary, there is only continuity.

Shaping vast expanses of landscape using themes of nature and architecture, the artist offers an outlet away from the claustrophobic reality of physical and mental borders and barriers. Through her body of work, Niniko allows us to observe the development of a universe parallel to ours, naturally executing this progression having created alternate laws of nature and time. Her pieces are snapshots, distinct but infinitely connected parts of a single continuous whole, chronicling an existence on a plane conjured up from her subconscious, intractable and in permanent flux. Changes in Niniko’s work occur at a slow, almost imperceptible pace, but the distance between her earlier pieces to those presented in this show, while understated, is vast.
