Barcelona-born artist Okokume, also known as Laura Mas Hernandez, has garnered flourishing international attention in recent years for her utopian visual universe populated by Cosmic Girl, a guardian-angel spirit who travels through space to restore planets in need to their former glory. First created by Okokume in 2015 as an attempt to raise awareness of current environmental issues, Cosmic Girl and her world encapsulate the artist's keen wishes for a bright and hopeful future.
As alluded to by the present work’s title, in Peek-a-boo, Okokume’s cotton-candy pink haired, turquoise-skinned spirit catches our eye from the top right corner, brightly illuminated against the twilight landscape behind. Bisecting the work horizontally to partially conceal the protagonist’s face is the artist’s frame which appears to resemble a window. Just as Cosmic Girl peeks in, the viewer too, peers out.
Okokume has been honoured with exhibitions in galleries and art fairs around the world, in cities such as Hong Kong (a solo show at K11 Museua in 2018), Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, Los Angeles and Berlin. Most recently, the JPS Gallery in Hong Kong hosted Inside, a solo presentation of Okokume’s work in 2021; her latest exhibition in Tokyo, Utopia, had also just ended on March 21st, 2022. Her current top auction record was achieved by Phillips in 2021.
