  • Catalogue Essay

The present model was exhibited at the 'Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild', Kunstindustrimuseet, Copenhagen, 19 September–5 October 1958, Stand 6.

Ole Wanscher designed furniture with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship, and he achieved both domestic and international acclaim. Throughout his career, Wanscher worked with the Danish master cabinetmaker A.J. Iverson, who was titled the ‘Master of the Guild’. This title referred to the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild’s which held an annual exhibition at the Kunstindustrimuseet for cabinetmakers to showcase their best designs each year. The present model armchair was exhibited at the prestigious exhibition in 1958. A Danish newspaper described the designer’s work, saying, “Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts.” The refined and simplified lines of the chair demonstrate Wanscher’s influence on future modern Danish design as well as designers working today.
