The Seamaster 300 was a “professional” watch that met the challenges of the deep-sea. The design featured a spring device in the crown assembly that became tighter as pressure built during a dive, creating more waterproof capability.
The earliest examples featured the caliber 501, with the reference CK2913 (see previous lot). The caliber 552 was released in 1960 and it is from this period that the present watch was produced. The reference 165.024 and 166.024 are similar with 42mm cases, but the 165.024 model does not have a date. These later references were the choice for the British military and they are often found at auction with the requisite military specs; “T” logo on the dial, welded lugs and military engravings to the case back. Some examples were not used and they have become very popular in the mark.
The present civilian example is in lovely condition with a nicely preserved dial. The dial features an oversized triangular numeral at the 12 o’clock, giving the watch its nickname “Big Triangle”. The watch is made more desirable by the luminescent Bakelite bezel.
Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.
Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
