The present Speedmaster is one of a numbered series of timepieces created in 1989 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Apollo XI mission. The Apollo XI was the first spaceflight that landed the first two people on the Moon, in which Neil Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface.
Omega produced in total 3 different series to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing: a numbered series of 2,000 watches for the United States, a numbered series of 250 watches for Germany, a limited series of 4,000 watches for the rest of the world. These three models are identical to the standard model except for the engraving on the side. The present watch belongs to the international market variety, of which no numbers were engraved but only with the inscription APOLLO XI 1969 on the caseband. Adding an element of intrigue, this series was fitted with the rare 1450/808 bracelet with semi-circular links.
Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.
Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
