  • Catalogue Essay

The present lot was specifically designed in 1957 for the boardroom of the F. L. Schmidt & Co. headquarters, Vigerslev Allé, Copenhagen and is today considered to be one of Palle Suenson’s masterworks. The humidor cabinet has profiled tambour doors which is an architectural motif that parallels the building’s headquarters linear façade. Palle Suenson as one of Denmark’s great, modernist architects in the 20th Century. His work covers a wide range, from single-family town houses to large-scale office buildings and public institutions. The often impressive volume and serene forms within his architecture are combined with an unfailing artistic sense of materials and details. Many of Denmark’s most prominent furniture designers including: Hans J. Wegner and Poul Kjærholm were employed by Suenson in their formative years. In 1938 Suenson was commissioned to design a new office building for Aarhus Oil Factory A/S. The commission where lots 39 and 40 are from included interior, furniture, light fittings and fixtures, most of which were custom made for the project. The building was completed and inaugurated in 1942.
