    - When the Panerai Zerograph ref. PAM00067 was first launched in 2000, it made quite an impression as both an aesthetically striking and highly unusual timepiece. Panerai was riding a wave of success at the turn of the millennium, thanks in part to its association with Sylvester Stallone’s 1996 film "Daylight." Even so, a limited edition of just 99 examples of the Zerograph represented an extremely small production run for such a popular brand.

    - But the uncommon traits of this watch extended beyond its scarcity. Rather than using a contemporary mass-produced movement, the Zerograph contains a vintage Lemania chronograph cal. CHT 15 dating back to the 1940s. Panerai elected to fully refurbish this mid-century movement as a nod to the military roots of their watches during WWII.

    - The overall design continues this militaristic aesthetic, with a large cushion-shaped case, wire lugs, high-contrast luminous dial, and chronograph complication being features typical of wartime timepieces. However, the material choice of precious white gold elevates the Zerograph into the realm of luxury. This clash between the tool-like watch design and opulent construction creates an intriguing dichotomy.

    - The Panerai Zerograph at once exudes masculinity and refinement. Its hefty weight immediately conveys its luxuriousness when held. But the legibility and functionality keep it looking utilitarian. This striking blend made the ref. PAM00067 an instant collectible. The present example both well-preserved and complete with all original accessories is highly sought after by enthusiasts.

  • Artist Biography

    Panerai

    Italian • 1860

Known for its robust designs and large case sizes, Officine Panerai was established in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, Italy. Around 1900, Giovanni's grandson Guido Panerai took over, and Panerai became the supplier to the Regia Marina — the Royal Italian Navy. After supplying the navy with high-precision instruments for a number of years, Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. By 1936, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai again with the request to design a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions. The watch they created became known as the "Radiomir".

Panerai's watches made during the early twentieth century era were comprised of cases designed and manufactured by Rolex SA, with Cortébert, a Swiss manufacturer, supplying the majority of their movements. The most recognizable designs from the firm are the Radiomir and Luminor. To date, vintage models from the first half of the 1900s, such as the reference 3646 and 6152 models, remain the most desirable among collectors.
