  • Catalogue Essay

    - The reference 5170 is a classic reminiscent of the archetypal Patek Philippe chronographs with its harmonious case proportions and simple two-register dial layout design. Launched in 2010, it has gone through numerous variations in pink gold, white gold and platinum since the release of the first-generation model in yellow gold.

    - The present reference 5170R-010 was released in 2016, and it was introduced together with a white dial edition. Elegantly encased in a classic 39.4mm Calatrava-style pink gold case, it features a black dial embellished by the luxurious applied Breguet numerals, leaf hands for the hours and minutes, and a sandblasted chronograph hand. It continues the simple and clean dial layout on the 5170G, introduced in 2015, with the removal of the Pulsometer scale.

    - Replacing the Lemania-based movement in the former reference 5070, the 5170 further boasts the in-house manual winding column-wheel chronograph calibre CH 29-535 PS, which is the first movement in the history of Patek Philippe to bear the Patek Philippe Seal, marking an end to the Geneva seal era. The research and development for the movement took five years, and it is considered to be one of the finest traditional chronograph movements to date.

    - Preserved in exceptional condition, the present example from circa 2017 is, to the best of our knowledge, fresh to the market and complete with its full set of accessories.

Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
