  • Catalogue Essay

Subject to a recent major retrospective at Tate Modern in London, the contradictory and tautological nature of Roni Horn's innovative and diverse oeuvre defies easy categorisation. Simplified to its essence, however, the focus of her art is simply the viewer's interaction with it. Engaged with the Conceptualist and Minimalist legacy, Horn's seemingly straightforward sculptural installations, often incorporating language, are in reality very intentional and the result of the artist's long and thorough working method.Without offering any context or purpose, the present lot, isolated and hung high on a white gallery wall, invites the viewer to reflect upon the self-contained statement: 'Her eyes were as hard as two old mountain ranges seen in the distance'."The thing is, I prefer not to be anything, because then I keep open all my options. Once I say what I am, then it's like excluding everything else. So why bother saying it? I don't think most of my work comes from the visual. It starts in a more conceptual realm, and the visual precipitates out of it. Language is a big factor in the development of the work. It's kind of pre-visual." (M. Kerr, ‘Roni Horn:The Luxury to Apprehend,' Flash Art, March – April 2004)
