Based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel, A Brother’s Favours portrays two brothers entangled in a web of jealousy and resentment, triggered by an unfair division of a cherished inheritance. Their writhing forms express the brothers’ anguish and desperation, which escalates into a moment of physical conflict. Ryan Jara’s evocative cubist style amplifies his artwork’s moral message: greed can shatter even the strongest familial bonds.
Jara describes his artistic practice as a “diary of personal experiences”. Heavily influenced by the works of Pablo Picasso, he often employs a cubist style. An artist who is widely recognised in the region, Jara has been acknowledged in several Filipino art competitions such as the Philippines Art Awards (Juror’s Choice, 2005), the Philippine/ASEAN Art Awards (Finalist, 2003) and the Nokia Art Awards (Semi-finalist, 2001).
