Sam Durant - Editions & Selected Works from the Lower East Side Printshop Archives: Online Auction New York Wednesday, September 4, 2024 | Phillips
  • “Sam Durant has developed a research-driven artistic practice in which he mines the image archives of international protests and demonstrations, from the early twentieth century to the present, searching for hand drawn protest signs and transferring these slogans from the source photographs into a format typically associated with commercial signage and advertising. By giving these slogans from protest movements an existence as a colorful lightbox, the American artist emphasizes their necessity, and often also the humorous or utopian character of the messages. Durant is able to convert protest slogans to poignant personal messages by changing their medium and the context in which they are shown.

For this edition with Case Studyo, Sam Durant delivers a sliver of hope in troubled times, reminding us that ‘ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE’. A slogan that has been around for a long time, it gained popularity during the anti-globalization movements of the 90’s and the World Social Forum. Those movements helped shape the visions we have now for a better world. Durant reminds us that we stand on the shoulders of so many activists and their movements to be in this moment of transformation and emphasizes that everybody should actively strive for a brighter tomorrow.” – Case Studyo
