In Dragonball, Sam Penaso uses the solid medium of stainless steel to paradoxically capture a flurry of flight. The central knot forms a sphere of power, which the sculpture tracks as it twists and turns dynamically through space. The reflective quality of the steel adds to the sense of movement created in the sculpture as surrounding activities are captured on its surface.
Penaso is an internationally respected visual and performance artist who has held over 30 solo exhibitions in the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Austria, Germany, Singapore, the US and the UAE. He has been awarded art residencies in London, New York and Abu Dhabi. Straddling various artistic practices, his art often exemplifies the multi-media, crossdisciplinary nature of Filipino contemporary art.
