Raised in a small Pennsylvania Dutch community in the Mennonite faith, Samantha Joy Groff brings a bright sensuality to the stoic tradition of rural painting. Her depictions of women and farm animals conjure an uneasy atmosphere of repression and desire, connection and isolation, and call into question American preconceptions of the countryside.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Groff received her MFA in Painting from Yale University in 2022. Recent solo shows include Town Gossip, Martha’s Contemporary, Austin, Jan.-Feb. 2022, TrueRiches, Nicodim Upstairs, Los Angeles, Dec. 2022-Feb. 2023, and Dark Pastures, Half Gallery, Los Angeles, Mar.-Apr. 2023, which reportedly sold out.
Horse Play marks Groff's auction debut.
