  • Catalogue Essay

Acclaimed artist, film director and screenwriter Steve McQueen delved into his long-term fascination with the street to create this mesmerising diptych. Here, close-up views of the wet asphalt, over which a cloud of steam has formed, resemble starry skies. More was shown in his solo exhibition at the Schaulager, Basel in 2013, and other major surveys of his work have taken place at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012, MoMA, New York in 2017, and most recently, London’s Tate Modern in 2020 – his first major show in his hometown since winning the Turner Prize in 1999. Over the last 25 years, McQueen has created some of the most innovative works spanning film, photography and sculpture; he has also directed four critically acclaimed feature films, including the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave.
