  • Catalogue Essay

"After training as a machinist, Baumgartel spent the first post-socialist decade studying the 'ancient principle of painting', confused but not overwhelmed by the new mediaboom, which strongly influenced the international art scene during just those years. In the late 90's , barely 30 years old, he entered the scene with developed ambivalent scenarios that balance everyday life and nightmare visions, pictorial worlds that exist within the arc of tension between narrative model and autonomous painting...One sees the picture, looks away, and the rest takes place inside one's head."
    (U. Lorenz, Tilo Baumgartel, Willingshausen, 2002, p. 45)

In The Fencing Lesson, Baumgartel creates a fairytale mood, in which everything seems to be dislocated from reality and frozen in time. Within this surreal realm, the three statue-like adolescents make up the composition; stiffly standing, lying or kneeling in the room. Their postures repeat the extreme emphasis on vertical and horizontal lines, becoming one with their environment. Each figure seems to be captured in his own world, alienated from his immediate surroundings. The Fencing Lesson poses, rather than answers questions, confusing the known and the unknown, the visible and the invisible, the real and the surreal.
