  • Burning news has to rouse the consciousness, inflame the heart and render the intellect incandescent.”
    —Tim Parchikov on this series

In the present monumental work, we see a silhouetted figure holding a burning newspaper within a snow-covered landscape. Photographer and filmmaker Tim Parchikov (Russian, b.1983) describes his Burning News project (2009-2012) as addressing ‘the problem of how human consciousness reacts when the flow of information – the “hot news” constantly bombarding it – reaches a critical point.’ Here, the artist’s aesthetic sensibilities and social preoccupations coalesce: the vibrant flames stand out against the muted background and the isolated figure compels the viewer to reflect on humanity and the effects of mass media. Parchikov has exhibited internationally and received the prestigious ‘Young Artist of the Year’ Kandinsky Prize in 2013.
