More than any of the other young painters who emerged from the fall of the Eastern Bloc, Sasnal has embraced a style, palette and choice of content that is peculiarly pared down, slim and concise it is affects. He explores topics that range from the quixotic to the mundane, but his adherence to pure forms of representation never wavers. Sasnal’s palette in the present lot, an untitled work from 2002, portrays a hauntingly beautiful portrait of three monkeys, poised for our intrigue as their anthropomorphized expressions engage our mind.
Both simple and cryptic, Sasnal’s paintings embrace an exotic and politically enticing system of representation, where the artist finds himself increasingly in dialogue with the art world’s canon of painting.
