FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York – 27 February 2014 - Phillips is pleased to announce highlights from the New York Contemporary Art & Design Evening Sale and Under the Influence auctions featuring an outstanding selection of work by the most coveted contemporary artists and designers of our time. The Evening Sale includes 32 lots with a pre-sale estimate of $5,700,000– $8,600,000. Under the Influence includes 215 lots with a pre-sale estimate of $3,300,000 – $4,800,000.

“The Contemporary Art & Design Evening Sale has become an exceptional auction category for Phillips because it perfectly exemplifies our collaborative spirit and unified aesthetic vision. We are delighted to offer a cohesive and highly-edited selection of contemporary art and design works to complement the comprehensive cross section of contemporary art found in the Under the Influence auction.” Michael McGinnis, Chief Executive Officer, Phillips.

The Evening Sale unites important works of art and design to present a contemporary aesthetic. Leading the sale is Marilyn Monroe, 1967, estimated at $1,500,000-2,500,000, a rare portfolio of 10 exceptional screenprints by Andy Warhol. In studying his most iconic subject, Warhol captured a vibrant and important time in American history. Rudolf Stingel’s Untitled, 1996-1997, estimated at $500,000-700,000, is a powerful abstraction rendered in the artist’s signature orange. Untitled (Traminer Altar), 2009, estimated at $300,000-500,000, from Stingel’s series of penitent saints, acts as a surrogate self-portrait. Ken Price’s amoeba-like Pink Egg, 1964, estimated at $300,000-400,000, is one of his most iconic pieces from the egg series. The series marks the beginning of Price’s experimentation with color, surface and form. Cady Noland’s commentary on the myth and promise of the American Dream is captured in Untitled, 1989, estimated at $250,000-350,000. The essence of the controversial and boundary-pushing work of British pop artist Allen Jones is present in Refrigerator, 2002, estimated at $250,000-350,000. Inspired by classical sculpture, the lifelike, erotically-charged central figure in Jones’s piece is reminiscent of his provocative leather-clad furniture sculptures.

Fresh to the market are a strong selection of works by today’s most promising emerging artists. The group includes Mint, 2005, a Bullet Hole series painting by Nate Lowman estimated at $200,000-300,000; Untitled (Chicken and Chips), 2011 a signature work of active gesture and narrative by Oscar Murillo estimated at $120,000-180,000; Untitled (Butterfly), 2003, a hypnotic black and white painting by Mark Grotjahn estimated at $100,000-$150,000; Untitled (Human Form), 2011, a graphic figurative painting by Joe Bradley estimated at $120,000-180,000; Alabaster SR10-2, 2010, a sublime Minimalist work by Sterling Ruby estimated at $100,000-150,000; and the Cinderella Table, circa 2002, estimated at $100,000-150,000, a flawless example of Jeroen Verhoeven’s ability to turn a functional object into sculpture.

Under the Influence is a platform for future auction stars while also offering a cross section of contemporary masters, post-war icons and emerging artists. Highlights from this sale include: Painting for HCA, 2007, by David Salle estimated at $60,000-80,000; Die Fast and Quiet... (from The Survival Series), 1983-85, by Jenny Holzer estimated at $50,000-70,000; Untitled 032, 2011, by Hugh Scott-Douglas estimated at $20,000-30,000; and Untitled (SK-DJ), 2011, by Angel Otero estimated at $10,000-15,000.
