Dina Amin, Head of 20th
Century & Contemporary Art, Europe: “We are delighted with the results achieved over the last
two days as the combined total for our Evening and Day sales was £31.7 million,
10% above last year’s combined total of £28.7 million. The solid results of
tonight’s Evening Sale followed our highest London Day Sale total in company
history. We are very pleased with the prices achieved for works by Joan
Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Peter Doig, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Avery Singer. We
were especially proud to represent the collection of Howard and Linda Karshan,
one of the most significant collections of modern and post-war paintings and
works on paper. We have strong momentum at Phillips: in the first six months of
this year, our total sales were up 68% compared to the same period last year,
and tonight’s results demonstrate that we’re off to a great start in the second
half. We look forward to the New York and Hong Kong auctions next month.”

“The
works in Shape & Space: New Ceramic Presence uniquely embody the
spirit of cross-category collecting, which is such an integral part of today’s
art market,” said Meaghan Roddy, Senior
International Design Specialist, and Henry
Highley, 20th Century & Contemporary Art Specialist and Head of Evening
Sale. “One of our goals was to address the ever-increasing central place of
clay and ceramic in contemporary art and we are encouraged to see an
enthusiastic response from bidders all over the world. Ai Wei Wei’s He Xie led
the sale at £609,000, with works by Lucio Fontana, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo
Picasso, and Yoshitomo Nara also performing well. We were delighted to see such
a strong demand for works by Betty Woodman, Kathy Butterly, and Hans Coper,
with all three of Coper’s stoneware works appearing in the top ten. Emerging
ceramic artists were also quite well-received. Obama and me by Roberto
Lugo, whose work has never been offered at auction before, more than doubled
its low estimate, underscoring the appeal of the category across all levels.”

Tamila Kerimova, Head of 20th Century & Contemporary
Art Day Sale: “Building on our success in June in London, the
total of £11.5 million marks the highest result for a Day Sale hosted by
Phillips London. Notable prices were achieved for KAWS, Günther Förg, and Tony
Cragg. We were very proud to have raised a considerable amount for the
Yorkshire Sculpture Park as well as strong prices for works from the Estate of
Howard Karshan. A series of records were established throughout the auction,
including new world records for Heimo Zobernig and Arturo di Modica.”
