CORPORATE ANNOUNCEMENT

Alexander Payne to Leave Phillips

LONDON – 2 MAY 2019 – After twenty years with Phillips, Alexander Payne, has taken the decision to leave his role as Worldwide Head of Design and Deputy Chairman, Europe.

Having set up the Design department at Phillips, Alexander has been instrumental in developing the market for contemporary design. He has been repeatedly successful in delivering exceptional auction results for Jean-Michel Frank, Alberto Giacometti, Eileen Gray and Shiro Kuramata, and has obtained many world record prices for works by designers including Lucie Rie, Jean Royère, Isamu Noguchi, Marcel Coard and Joris Laarman. Notably, under Alexander’s leadership the Design department achieved the world auction record for the most expensive piece of design by a living designer with Marc Newson’s ‘Lockheed Lounge’.

Edward Dolman, CEO, says, “Alexander has created a department that is world-renowned.  He remains an internationally leading source of knowledge and expertise.  Alexander will be remembered at Phillips for his passion and dedication, which have created some of the most significant auction results in recent history. I wish him every success in his future ventures in the field of Design.”

Alexander says “I am immensely grateful for the loyalty and friendship of my wonderful colleagues, and for their dedication to, and belief in, the Design team.  I will look back on my time at Phillips with much gratitude, and enormous pride in what my team has achieved.”
