Cordelia Lembo, Head of Department, New York, Vice President, said, “The momentum gained this spring has carried through Phillips’ June sale and we are pleased to see such continued strength in the market. French, Italian, and American Design performed extremely well across the board, and as we continue to achieve strong prices for French 20th Century Design, we were pleased to set a new record for a ‘Flaque’ table by Jean Royère. The two unique chairs by Wendell Castle exceeded expectations, with the ‘Student’ chair selling for over ten times its estimate and the ‘Pedestal’ chair more-than-doubling its estimate. Works from the Westminster Collection also realized strong prices, as the demand for high-quality ceramics maintains its strength, and we were delighted to bring several of these artists to auction for the first time.”

Alexander Payne, Worldwide Head of Design, added, “We were also honored to have been entrusted with the works from Trudie Styler and Sting’s personal collection. This selection of design pieces reflects their discerning eye and collectors responded enthusiastically, culminating in a new record for Piero Fornasetti, which showcases Phillips’ continued strength for Italian 20th Century Design in the marketplace.
