Cary Leibowitz and Kelly Troester, Worldwide Co-Heads of Editions, said, “We have been honored to build Phillips’ Editions department over the last 10 years and have been thrilled to see the category’s continued growth. Today’s results increase the momentum gained over the last decade, as we have seen strong prices for historically significant and popular prints and multiples. The huge auction sold an astonishing 392 lots (out of 417) for 94% sold and the high prices resulted in 97% by value. We had nearly 900 bidders in this sale from 38 different countries and, in addition to achieving the highest sale total ever for our department (besting Editions London January result), this sale broke our company’s record for the most online sale registrants. Also of note is that over 80% of lots received an online bid. The top lots in the sale sold to either in-room bids or from the active phones, underscoring the international appeal and variety of methods available to clients in this vibrant area of collecting. Robert Indiana’s NUMBERS ONE through ZERO led the auction at $915,000, with records by Josef Albers, Andy Warhol, Sam Gilliam, Kerry James Marshall, Ellsworth Kelly, John McLaughlin and Yoshitomo Nara amongst others (see below). In addition works by Brice Marden, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet and Keith Haring also performed exceptionally well. We were particularly pleased to see the cover lot, Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square break the six-figure mark and SP soar to $125,000, over four times its estimate. We look forward to our final sale of the Spring season in London on 7 June.”
